Nfagie and Jayden from Wharenui School were among thousands of school children who descended on Horncastle Arena last week to celebrate all things cultural. The Cultural Festival, which ran from Monday to Friday, had more than 4700 pupils taking part from all over Canterbury. There were multicultural performances, a wearable art pageant and a visual art exhibition.

We will listen – ECan BY ANDREW KING

Environment Canterbury has vowed to work with Yaldhurst residents to formulate a plan around quarry management. The Western News revealed last week the outrage among residents who claim ECan is not policing quarry operations well enough. ECan acting director of resource management Marty Mortiaux said they will take on board what the residents’ concerns are. “We have now started a dialogue, which is important,” he said.

“The next step is to review everything we heard at the community meeting and to establish an action plan together with residents, also involving city council and the quarry companies.” Last week, Western News revealed that Winstone Aggregates on Old West Coast Rd had been served an abatement notice because it has excavated past its consented limit. About 60 residents met with ECan and city council staff to vent their frustration about quarry locations, dust, noise and water quality. They accused ECan of being

“toothless” when it came to enforcing resource consent conditions. Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association Bob Cross said that they were ‘thrilled’ to hear that ECan would be including them in future planning. “That is a positive step forward,” he said. “There is a slight concern that this has come from a lot of pressure. “Hopefully, when the pressure comes off a bit the dialogue will continue.” Said Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck: “I think the residents did great work in ensuring they got ECan’s atten-

tion for an abatement notice to be issued,” she said. Mr Cross said that the way forward is to make a solid plan that takes into account what benefits residents and quarries. “ECan leaders will need to sort their departments out and come up with a strong position of what they will do in the future,” he said. “The planning needs to be reviewed, we have been trying to raise these concerns for years and the way forward needs to be cemented in stone.’’

Two Burnside High School students have won the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge in Auckland. With gas hobs flaring, knives chopping, saucepans simmering and teamwork at its best, Clize Craven and Miku Kiyama claimed top spot. Winning the regional from 10 secondary schools around the country put their skills to the test as they created four servings of both an entree and main course, all within 90min. Locally grown beetroot had to feature in the entree, with chicken, potatoes and seasonal New Zealand grown vegetables key ingredients of the main dish. After a gruelling 90min of cooking and a nerve-wracking wait as the judges deliberated the duo’s two dishes got the nod. The entree was a golden beetroot fritter with baby chioggia and red saute, goats cheese, and beetroot chips accompanied by a rich beetroot sauce. The main had chicken breast filled with semi-dried tomato and preserved lemon on a crumbed parmesan potato cake with petite sausage, char-roasted seasonal vegetables with jus, and tomato butter sauce. A stunned Clize said that a lot of hard work went into preparing for the event and the win has made it all worthwhile. “We did well – and so did the other contestants,” Clize said.

TOP CHEFS: Burnside High’s Clize Craven and Miku Kiyama have won the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge with a golden beetroot fritter entree (left) and chicken, potatoes and seasonal New Zealand grown vegetables in the main dish. “We are proud of our effort and would like to thank our teachers for helping us to achieve what we have.” The duo were scored across a number of criteria – food preparation, food safety, timing, sustainable cooking practice – including minimisation of food waste – presentation, taste and the use of New Zealand grown seasonal vegetables, potatoes and chicken. Chief judge, chef Mark Wylie of Cater Plus, said in the end it was a tough and close decision. “All the judges were impressed by the creativity and thought that had gone into each dish the

students served,” he said. “They had taken their dishes to the next level by sourcing and including local, regional produce in their recipes, it was truly outstanding and it reflected in the taste and presentation of the final dishes.” The winning duo each receives a $2000 study scholarship and a trip to Tahiti to represent New Zealand at the International Secondary Schools Culinary Competition in October. Their school receives a $1000 Bidvest voucher and a Blue Seal turbofan oven and stand from Moffat New Zealand.

Varsity parking fees to increase BY ANDREW KING Student parking at Canterbury University will become more expensive. The Western News has learned the university plans to increase the price of parking permits by 15 per cent a year for the next five years. Currently parking permits are $264.50. A parking permit does not guarantee you a park, it only gives you a ‘licence to hunt’.

Canterbury University Students Association was unavailable for comments. On top of increasing parking prices, students have been facing longer and longer walks from surrounding streets to get to class as more time restricted parking is added. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said that parking was a huge problem in the city. “Parking is the biggest problem

in the city at the moment,” she said. “There is a walkway to get to the uni [from Hamilton Ave] and you do get a bit of parking from the students.” Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said they have had parking issues around the university for a very long time. “Parking has always been an issue and we have done a lot of work around this,” he said.

“Construction work around the uni at the same time as the academic year has not helped the situation.” Mr Mora said that students would have to consider public transport as parking in the area would become harder to find. “We need a mind shift from students. “They have to look at if they need a car or would they be easier to take the bus or ride a bike.”

Hornby High’s deputy principal Jonathan Rogers has been in education for 41 years, 21 of them at Hornby High School as deputy principal. He chats with reporter Andrew King about history, schooling and being an original Westie So, Jonathan, how long have you been in education for? I started as a new fresh-faced teacher in 1975, so this will be my 41st year. What was your motivation to get into education? Oh goodness, I recall when I was around 11 or 12 and being asked ‘what are you going to do when you grow up, John?’ and I just said teaching. I don’t know how that happened, there are no other teachers in the family – I am from a farming background. I am the youngest of six children and growing up in the 60s and I said teaching and I don’t know why. I never really waived from that – it is something I have always had in my mind that I wanted to do. Both of your parents were farmers? My dad was a farmer and mum sort of managed and ran shops and things like that. What kind of farmer was your dad? Oh, we are talking way back in the days, in the 1940s and 50s here, he was a dairy farmer in North EDUCATION STALWART: Hornby High School deputy principal John Auckland. school, did you get into trouble l or were you a straight-A student? No, no I definitely wouldn’t say straight-A, more like middle-C student (laughing). No, I have to say I never had to bend over and take six-of-the-best the entire time I was there. I never went down that route, I sort of stayed with the good classes and went from there. Then onto Auckland University in 1970. I was the first in my family to go to university and as I said I was the youngest of six. I am the only one to have gone to university - the others got out of education earlier than that. What do they all do? Some went farming, some joined the armed forces, hairdressing, nursing, office work. A real mixed bag then? Yeah, a real mixed bag - they all have good honest lives and have raised wonderful children. Where was your first teaching job?

My first job was at Penrose High School – it is called One Tree Hill College nowadays. That was a fantastic school to teach at. I stayed there a long time – I was there for 18-19 years, so as you can see I haven’t been very far in my career. You have had a few different teaching roles then? Well I would say they jobs I did changed a heck of a lot – I didn’t do the same thing year after year. I tried a wide range of different things from year 9 right up to year 13. I also branched out and did a lot of community and adult education. For a few years I looked after attendance, so I had to keep track of every student that came and went at school. That would be well before computers? Yes, it was we had a bunch of little cue cards that you had to file. I also did the pastoral type duties in the school so there was a lot of opportunities, lots of different jobs that could be done so that gave me a good grounding on how a school worked. What is your favourite subject to teach? Undoubtedly history, that is my passion. It is a funny old thing, most of the history taught when I was at university was American and British history but I have a huge interest in New Zealand history hence why I have done a lot of reading on it. Even nowadays kids say that New Zealand doesn’t have any history compared to what has happened all around the world.

is an original Westie It takes a while to convince them that we actually have a hell of a lot of history. Our history is something that we need to know about otherwise people will stay ignorant of it and say stupid things. So any chance I get to put people straight about that kind of thing, I do. How long have you been deputy principal at Hornby now? I came down here in 1994. So this is your 21st year there? I suppose it is. There wouldn’t be many - only three people - that have been here longer than me now. When I first came here there were a lot of teachers who had been here since the school opened in 1975, but I have out lasted them all now (laughing). It has been a great school. There is so much variety, at the same time there have been some tough times. What was the toughest moment you’ve experienced? When I first came here the school was in a declining roll situation. When it was set up in 1975, they had lots of kids - during the 80s they had something like 800-900 kids here, but when I arrived in the mid 90s it had been dropping and it was around 600. The school was also going through and making redundant all the teachers who were not required. Those can be very unsettling and very difficult times. Okay - now the opposite - what is one of the standout memories - what always brings a smile to your face? I don’t think there is only one

We are in a very good patch now and after all my years at Hornby, after going through all the hard yards, we are really getting into a good point now, particularly with the rebuild and all the technology we have access to. These are exciting times, even though I am getting towards the end of my career. That certainly brings a smile to my face. Having the year 7s and 8s here, expanding the school in that way, I see that as something that is a really good thing. On a smaller scale, the bit

that gets you out of bed in the morning is the working with kids. The kids at Hornby are very natural and so grateful that you can do so much for them. When you break through to kids and show them a pathway and say ‘you can do this, you have the talent’, those are the things that drive you. Okay, a little about you now, are you married? Yes I have been married since the 1980s. Do you have any kids? Yes, two children. One boy

Oh, there will be some fishing and boating involved in my retirement plans for sure. We have a passion for Golden Bay and we get up there as often as we can. You have been in Christchurch for a while now, how do you find it? Oh, we love it here. We often think when we go back to Auckland to visit family and get off the plane - it is quite a good place to be. You miss the beaches and those sort of things and going boating out on the gulf, it is so nice out there and that is quite special to me. But once you sort of get out of the airport and into the traffic you think ah, no, we won’t move back. In Christchurch nowhere is really more than 10 minutes away from anywhere. We have had a good life here. So you grew up in Auckland? Well, I lived on the farm until I was around seven or eight then we moved to Henderson in West Auckland, so I was a Westie before there ever was such a thing. One of the original Westies then? Yeah, one of the originals. So I lived in and around Auckland right up until the early 90s. Whereabouts did you go to high school? I went to old Henderson High School - just your typical community high school.

Healthy pre-school wins gold

Portobelo Preschool in Avonhead has been awarded the Gold Healthy Heart Award from the Heart Foundation New Zealand. The Healthy Heart Award is given out to organisations that promote healthy eating and exercise. Usually the award is issued in stages – bronze, silver and then gold. But Portobelo jumped straight to the gold award, as the pre-school already had healthy eating practices in place. Pre-school team leader Natasha Grieve has just taken over from Lisa Dean who is now on maternity leave

and said the credit must go to her. “She did an amazing job promoting healthy eating and exercise,” she said. Things that helped them meet the criteria at each level were taking children on walking trips to the local fruit and vegetable shop and outings to parks to promote physical activity. The pre-school have developed lunch box guidelines and advised parents on healthy options on a continuous basis. Heart Foundation New Zealand representative Bex Parry said the pre-school had gone right to the top because

Pupils at Kidsfirst Kindergarten Hornby and Wales St have been busy in the garden planting their sunflower seeds. Kidsfirst Kindergarten Hornby teacher Katie McIntosh said that learing to work in the garden is a valuable skill to teach young kids. “It’s really important to us that our children have experiences with sustainable practises such as gardening,” she said. “Being involved in the Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens project last year was incredible. Our children learnt how to nurture their sunflowers and gained a higher appreciation for doing so and that’s why we are taking part for a second time.” Kidsfirst Kindergartens Wales Street head teacher June King said they had been involved for three years and the kids loved the project. “Our children can’t get enough of their sunflowers – as they gain confidence and pride from watching them grow,” she said.

GRASSROOTS SPORT

Interest in basketball shoots up at Hornby High BY ANDREW KING Hornby High School is going through a basketball boom. The school has had seven teams competing in girls and boys competitions this season. The school has quietly grown in strength over the past few years – a far cry from 2008 when they couldn’t even field one boys team. They only had one girls team that year. By starting to develop a good team culture and the popularity of basketball starting to take off, they scraped together both a boys and girls team the following year and they didn’t look back. The senior boys finished third in the Friday night secondary schools first division competition this year. Last year was their first time taking a team to South Island tournament were they placed 11th. The addition of year 7 and 8 students has meant that they have also added two more teams into the local competition and are starting to help

Senior A boys coach James Harris said that popularity in the sport and team culture has been the main reasons behind the shift. “The turnaround has been

a combination of basketball getting hugely popular in New Zealand and especially Christchurch,” he said. “Setting a really good team culture of practising well and being successful has led to a lot more students wanting to

join teams.” Harris primarily coaches the senior boys but has a hand in all the teams and sometimes has a couple of Canterbury Rams players helping out a practice. “It’s been fantastic having the Rams guys come down,” he said. “A lot of kids who wouldn’t have been involved, got involved in basketball this year because of the sessions they run and our existing teams have learned a lot of great stuff from them that I don’t know how to teach.” Mr Harris said the culture transcends sport itself and gives the students involved great life skills. “The growth has been about a lot more than basketball. I love basketball and I want to teach basketball skills, but more importantly it’s about learning life skills through sport. “The discipline and commitment that they’re learning through sport translates into family life and careers.” • More sport page 11

Delightful, clean lines from JNBY

T

JNBY’s stunning Spring/Summer 2015-16 collection is inspired, appropriately enough, by construction.

here is an inherent minimalism with strong structured outlines, softened with rich shades and multi layering. The collection presents an elegant interpretation of construction by redesigning dimensions and playing with volume and proportions, exaggerating the shapes of garments in H shapes, A shapes and egg shapes. As always with their garments, the delight is in the details, from where they place their creases to the subtle flow of dye along a streak line. Their clean and simple silhouettes are still highly feminine, using delicate fabrics and faultless, flattering cuts, and their pieces are designed to combine perfectly to form a capsule wardrobe that goes from work to play and from day to night. One of their key pieces is a stunning, draped dress with deliberately-frayed cap sleeves. Designed to suit all ages and shapes, it is in chiffon of the palest of greens and features the geometric shapes that tie the garment to the architectural theme of the collection. Perfect with flats for shopping or heels for dinner, or give it an edge worn over JNBY’s mesh leggings. Another key garment is a crisp, white tunic which falls straight from the shoulders but because it’s constructed from the lightest fabric, it skims the body. Pair it with their crop

pants in your choice of vivacious colour. The sheer mesh look that has been a feature of so many catwalks is made classy and given an edgy feel in the hands of JNBY’s designers. Pockets and seams become architectural features of garments that are designed to be layered over any outfit, adding drama, colour and texture. Subtle greys and neutrals, stark whites and soft blues are key colours running

Learning opportunities at Pre-health education at CPIT CPIT’s CAmPus ConneCT Love health and exercise science? If you don’t think

C

PIT’s Campus Connect branches are opening their doors so people have the opportunity to come and talk to the staff about what they can learn in their neighbourhoods. From 9am to 12pm on Tuesday, September 15, all of the Campus Connect sites, including Madras Street, Bishopdale, Hornby, New Brighton and Rangiora, will simultaneously host an open day so people can have a coffee and a biscuit, and discuss their study options in a relaxed setting. “We want to invite people to a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where they can learn about Campus Connect and how they can benefit from it. Once they’re inside, they can have a casual chat about what learning options might help them get new skills,” manager of Campus Connect Peter Nock says. Campus Connect offers free computing programmes for those who want to learn at their own pace as well as courses in job hunting and business. The courses provide self-paced, flexible learning for anyone who wants to gain a formal qualification for employment, learn the fundamentals of computing or enhance existing skills. Campus Connect offers around 22 different courses so there is something to suit most people. Nock says the courses are flexible to meet people’s learning needs and what they want to achieve. “It can be intimidating for people to come in and try something new, especially if they haven’t enjoyed their previous

Of these, the most popular courses would involve learning about Microsoft Word, Excel and MYOB,” Nock says. Campus Connect have had over 2500 students studying with them each year, with many of them enhancing their computing skills. tudying a degree programme in health is more accessible than you might imagine. Enrol in a foundation pre-health programme and you could be studying nursing, sports science, human nutrition or physical activity and health promotion in February 2016. The condensed Certificate in Pre-Health and Science will have you ready to start a health degree in three months instead of six. You’ll be getting started in an industry that is crying out for well-trained people as our population ages and interest in health grows. Nursing is as dependable a profession as it has ever been, but modern nurses have much more opportunity for specialisation and for ongoing training. You can change specialisations and find the conditions that suit you – whether that is mental health, emergency, community nursing or hospital ward. CPIT is known nationally for its nursing programme, but the institute also offers a range of sports exercise and wellness degrees that are ideal for those who love sport, exercise, nutrition and wellness education. These are rapidly expanding areas as interest across health increases. The specialisations of the Bachelor of Applied Science are sports and exercise science, physical activity and health promotion and human nutrition. They lead to jobs such as

personal trainer or group exercise instructor and more advanced roles such as working with elite athletes, or as a sports scientist, community health promoter or private health consultant. The scope for employment is huge. Certificate in Pre-Health and Science students study core subjects, including human biology, cell and microbial biology, maths and academic literacy skills; however, you will also have the opportunity to select specialist subjects including chemistry, introduction to health and social services, interpersonal communication, algebra or statistics, dependant on which pre-health pathway you select. The Certificate in Pre-Health starts on September 21. Find out more at www.cpit.ac.nz or phone 0800 242 476.

Stir to dissolve sugar. Continue microwaving for 3-4 minutes until liquid is light golden. Remove — the toffee will continue to colour on standing. Remove icecream from freezer. Place in meringue nests, if using. Drizzle with toffee. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Combine the ricotta, egg, parmesan, salt, black pepper, orange rind and half the thyme in a bowl. Spoon into four small oiled ramekins. Top with the remaining thyme. Spray with oil. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden and set. — Serves 4.

Incontinence - a problem we must face

I

ncontinence is a problem for 1.1 million New Zealanders. Even though these numbers are huge with one in three New Zealanders affected, it is not commonly talked about in a social setting. For some people, it is a bladder problem but for others it can be bowel or a combination of both. Statistics show us that only one in three people with a problem seek help, many believing it is a consequence of ageing or childbirth and

for others, that nothing can be done. This is not the case as problems can be solved in the majority of cases. If you or a family member has a continence problem, don’t let fear or embarrassment stop you from asking for help and information. You can phone Continence NZ for advice or go to www. continence.org.nz. Nationwide continence services are listed on the website. These services are mostly free.

Don’t let the pain of arthritis slow you down

Help yourself Time-honoured remedy and Arthritis New Zealand too

A

Arthritis New Zealand’s annual appeal is from September 22 to 28

O I

f you have arthritis, you’re not alone. There are more than 578,000 people in New Zealand living with arthritis. This equates to 16 per cent of the population including 1000 children. Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability and can occur to anyone at any age. Arthritis is not just a condition of the elderly. More than 50 per cent of those with a diagnosis are aged 15 to 64. The good news is that you can still lead an active and positive life with the right treatment and support. You don’t have to let arthritis’ pain slow you down. Exercise has proven benefits in terms of reduced stiffness, improved mobility and reduced pain. Comments from participants in Arthritis New Zealand’s exercise programmes include: “I have felt fitter and have more energy.” “Feeling better in myself.” “More movement in joints and less pain.” “Less drugs (pain killers).” Arthritis New Zealand is the national organisation focused on raising awareness, advocating for those with the condition and providing advice and support. For information on land-based, waterbased and stationary bike-based exercise programmes in Christchurch and the many other services we offer, please phone Arthritis New Zealand on 0800 663 463 or go to our website www.arthritis.org.nz.

ver half a million New Zealanders live with arthritis. It can cause much pain and is one of the leading causes of disability. Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are many ways you can manage and relieve your symptoms. Physical activity is essential to help relieve pain and stiffness and keep muscles strong. Move, move, move! One easy way to keep joints moving and manage pain and stiffness was discovered by an Otaki woman when searching for a way to help her severely affected husband. She made an aircycle exerciser. These exercises also help strengthen leg muscles to support knees and hips, and improve balance and mobility. Aircycle is donating $5 to Arthritis New Zealand from each direct order received this month. Visit www.aircycle.co.nz to order an Aircycle, or phone 04 569 5013 for credit card orders. If paying online or by cheque, mark your order “Arthritis.” You can call Arthritis New Zealand on 0800 663 463.

ccording to a country doctor DC Jarvis from Vermont in the USA, cider vinegar and honey (CV & H) can be an important part of a long healthy life. Dr Jarvis noted Vermonters, who regularly consumed cider vinegar and honey, had excellent health with many putting in a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well into their 80s. Dr Jarvis found the effects of cider vinegar and honey on arthritis can be remarkable, with many patients reporting almost total relief after taking a course of the cider vinegar and honey. Dr Jarvis surmised that the acid and potassium in cider vinegar counteracted calcium deposits and helped the body control calcium use. As well as a general tonic, Dr Jarvis found regular administration of cider vinegar and honey at the onset of complaints such as the common cold, sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever and childhood diseases, such as chicken pox and measles, was accompanied by an improvement in the condition with symptoms either disappearing, or the conditions were extremely mild and soon over. Apple cider vinegar contains all the goodness of the apple in a form that is readily accepted by the body. Scientists have found over 90 different substances in ACV, among them 20 important trace elements, minerals, essential enzymes, a number of different acids, including malic acid, amino acids and roughage in the form of potash and pectin. A scientific study at the Shizuka University

in Japan has proven ACV to have potent antioxidant benefits – it can destroy free radicals, which are a major factor in ageing. Also, the ACV can break down cholesterol formations in the blood vessels. ACV and H is a powerful tonic that also promotes digestion, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste, and helps neutralise any toxic substances that enter the body. It is important to note not all cider vinegar is made in the traditional way and results are likely to prove disappointing with these other vinegars.

FIRST SHOW A SELL OUT But do not fear.

A second show is on sale now!

Lyttelton based rockabilly raconteur Lindon Puffin plays Gustav's in the Woolston Tannery later this month. Considered a 'comeback gig', Lindon says he stepped off the treadmill to build a house in Lyttelton in the hope of repaying the debt of free couches he's wracked up over the years. For those that haven't delighted in the Lindon Puffin experience... he plays a mean harmonica, spins hilarious yarns and fronts the occasional tv show but prefers to describe himself as a fisherman trapped in a musicians body. Lindon Puffin has released several albums, toured NZ relentlessly, and played across Australia, Europe and the States. He has supported some famous dudes like Billy Bragg, Jack Black & Chris Knox. Been short listed for a Silver Scroll, had an album in the top 10 and twice been adjudged live performer of the year. Lindon Puffin at Gustav's (free) | 9pm Saturday 26th September.

Anika Moa arrives in Christchurch shortly as part of her nationwide tour. With her initial Saturday 19th September show SELLING OUT super fast, a second show is scheduled for Sunday 20th September at the Wunderbar in Lyttelton. On this, her 'Queen At The Table' album tour, Anika is travelling with her one and only band member (and album producer), Jol Mulholland. It is her fifth solo album and introduces a more electronic sound to her music. It follows on from last year's Tui Award winning album 'Songs for Bubbas'.

playing lots of songs from the critically acclaimed new album, along with some old songs and some of her favourite covers. Touring from from Queenstown to Takaka, Whanganui to the Coromandel, the show is sure to delight her older, loyal fans and certainly pick up new fans along the way. Opening for Anika will be SJD (aka Sean James Donnelly). He too has recently released a new album, 'Saint John Divine' and tours nationally for the first time as a solo artist. General admission, $30. Show starts at 7.30pm.

For this show Anika and Jol will be
